The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have recently donated critical medical supplies to the Chinese government for the treatment of patients in severe condition as the country battles the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) outbreak.

The medical supplies donated by FAO to the Chinese government, which include non-invasive ventilators, patient monitoring systems and infusion pumps, were sent to Wuhan in two batches on March 14. In addition, FAO will also conduct surveys and technical consultation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) and other relevant institutions, with a focus on understanding the emergence of the virus at the animal-human interface and its impact on people’s livelihood.

WFP donated extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) equipment and non-invasive ventilators for treating critically-ill patients. The first batch of 50 ventilators has made its way to Hubei Charity Federation in Wuhan on March 15. ECMO equipment is scheduled to arrive in Wuhan soon. In addition to medical equipment, WFP is also providing air transport of critical items, and will carry out follow-up work together with MARA.
