Zhang Taolin Attends Celebration Marking 20th Anniversary of Sino-Chilean Demonstration Farm

A celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Sino-Chilean Demonstration Farm was held on August 30 in the Jizhou District of Tianjin Municipality. Zhang Taolin, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Wang Xiaoning, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Tianjin Municipal People’s Congress, Eduardo Frei, former President of Chile, and Antonio Walker, Minister of Agriculture of Chile, attended the event and delivered respectively their speeches.  

  

Zhang said China and Chile have embraced traditional friendly relations, which remained unshakable and become even stronger. Agricultural cooperation is a major component of bilateral relations, with cooperation in various areas developing fast, particularly in trade of agricultural products. In 2018, China became Chile’s biggest export market for agricultural products. For the past two decades, the Sino-Chilean Demonstration Farm has introduced fine fruit tree varieties from Chile, that demonstrated Chile’s advanced cultivation and management techniques, promoted recreational and tourism agriculture, made positive contributions to the development of China’s fruit industry, and become a model of success for agricultural cooperation between China and Latin American countries. 

  

Zhang stressed that Chile is a major fruit-producing country and China is the world’s biggest fruit-producing and -consuming country. Zhang said that fruit-related science and technology in the two countries has its special characteristics and production is highly complementary in terms of seasons, creating huge potential for cooperation. He expressed his hope that the Sino-Chilean Demonstration Farm will seize opportunities and make innovate method so as to become even bigger and stronger, and as a result becoming a bright symbol of agricultural cooperation between the two countries. Currently, the two sides are advancing the development of the Chilean-Chinese Demonstration Farm in Chile, hoping to copy the successful experience of the Sino-Chilean Demonstration Farm and pushing for the project to be implemented at an earlier date, he added. 

  

Both Frei and Walker both spoke highly of agricultural cooperation between China and Chile and the Sino-Chilean Demonstration Farm’s achievements over the past two decades. They expressed Chile’s willingness to work with China to speed up the building of a demonstration farm in Chile.
