On November 5, Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen met with the delegation headed by Emma Kowa, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Sierra Leone, in Beijing. The two sides exchanged their views on jointly cracking down on illegal fishing and supporting Sierra Leone to conduct surveys on fishery resources, build up fishing ports and developing aquaculture.

Yu stated that the fishery departments of both two sides have the responsibility to deepen bilateral fishery cooperation so as to implement the consensus reached by state leaders of the two countries at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Therefore, the Chinese side will actively promote the implementation of projects involving the Memorandum of Understanding on China-Serra Leone fishery cooperation and the first meeting of the China-Sierra Leone Mixed Committee on Fisheries, designate specific departments to implement these projects, and formulate detailed plans to reap fruits as soon as possible.

Ms. Emma Kowa fully agreed with suggestions proposed by Yu and expressed gratitude to China for its support in various fields of Sierra Leone. She also expressed the willingness to work with China in strengthening bilateral fishery cooperation, carrying out cooperation projects, and providing supports in terms of policies and legislation in pursuit of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Sierra Leone.

After the meeting, the delegation headed by Ms. Emma Kowa will attend the 23rd China International Fisheries Expo and inspect fishery facilities.
