Minister Han Changfu Meets Icelandic Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture Júlíusson

On October 15, local time, Minister Han Changfu held a talk with Mr. Kristján Þór Júlíusson, Icelandic Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture, in Reykjavik and the two sides signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural and Fishery Cooperation.


Minister Han Changfu briefly introduced the newly established Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and stressed that new functions and missions of the ministry will embark on a new journey to expand agricultural opening up in China. Minister Han Changfu also pointed out that agriculture in China and Iceland is highly complementary and enjoys great potential for cooperation so that the cooperation shall be deepened in five aspects. First, in terms of cooperation mechanism, set up a departmental level working group on agricultural cooperation as soon as possible and establish an effective platform for jointly consulting cooperation plan and facilitating cooperation and development; Second, in terms of fishery, expand bilateral trade of aquatic products and encourage fishery enterprises as well as scientific research institutions in the two countries to carry out cooperation in investment and scientific research in pursuit of pushing forward common development of aquaculture and pelagic fishing industry in China and Iceland; Third, in terms of animal husbandry, strengthen cooperation in the establishment of mutton sheep industrial chain, genetic breeding and feed processing so as to promote the improvement of economic and environmental performance of mutton sheep breeding; Fourth, in terms of development and utilization of geothermy, enhance mutual learning of developing facility horticulture technology through utilizing geothermy in order to realize harmonious development between agriculture and ecological environment; Fifth, in terms of trade in agricultural products, organize agricultural enterprises participating in large-scale agricultural exhibitions held in the two countries to introduce more featured agricultural products with high quality to markets in China and Iceland.


Mr. Júlíusson fully agreed with the proposals put forward by Minister Han Changfu and considered the development of China-Iceland agricultural cooperation as a significant development opportunity for the Icelandic side. He also expressed the willingness to deepen pragmatic cooperation in areas of fishery and animal husbandry in an all-round way with China in pursuit of promoting bilateral agricultural and fishery cooperation to a new height.


During his stay in Iceland, Minister Han Changfu also attended the Agricultural Expo in Iceland and made field visits to beef cattle breeding, facility agriculture that increases temperature through geothermy as well as salmon breeding enterprises.
