First Meeting of China-Zanzibar Joint Committee on Fisheries Held

On September 6, Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen and Rashid Ali Juma, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock and Fisheries of Zanzibar, co-chaired the first meeting of China-Zanzibar Joint Committee on Fisheries in Beijing. They exchanged views and reached broad consensus on China-Zanzibar fisheries cooperation.


The two sides hold that Zanzibar has rich fishery resources while China has advantages in capitals, technologies and fishery equipments. Therefore, the two countries have strong complementarities and great potentials for fisheries cooperation.


The two sides agreed to carry out comprehensive fisheries cooperation in a steady way in fishing, processing and infrastructure construction, among others. Upon fishery resources surveys, the two sides will determine the access fishing resources of Chinese fishing vessels on a scientific and rational basis, in order to promote the conservation and rational use of fishery resources in Zanzibar.


Both sides were unanimous to jointly fight against illegal fishing activities and establish an emergency communication mechanism. The two sides also exchanged views on issues of common concerns to Chinese fishery enterprises, such as fisheries cooperation laws and regulations as well as investment policies.


The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on China-Zanzibar Fisheries Cooperation and the first meeting of China-Zanzibar Joint Committee on Fisheries indicated that China-Zanzibar fisheries cooperation was officially integrated into the bilateral intergovernmental cooperation framework, and it will play an active role in promoting the in-depth development of China-Zanzibar and China-Africa fisheries cooperation, and facilitating the implementation of the “Belt and Road Initiative”.
