On June 22, the 8th Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Agriculture and Agrarian Development was held in Skukuza, South Africa. Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen attended the meeting with a delegation and made a keynote speech. Under the theme “ Climate Smart Approaches and the Actions to Enhance Resilience of Agricultural and Food Production Systems”, the participants exchanged their views on issues of common concern in terms of agricultural development in BRICS members and released the Joint Declaration of the Eighth Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Agriculture and Agrarian Development.

Yu pointed out that climate change had a profound effect on agricultural production, and agriculture is also an important factor influencing climate change. Therefore, greater contributions must be made in order to combat climate change. Yu also introduced Chinese effective practices and successful experience of addressing climate change in agriculture and put forward four suggestions on deepening cooperation among BRICS members. Firstly, improve the ideological understanding. High attention should be paid to the profound effect of global climate change on agricultural production, especially on food security. Secondly, coordinate the common ground. Consistent position on climate change and food security should be formed. Thirdly, develop low-carbon agriculture. Some advanced and appropriate technologies such as water-saving agriculture, circular agriculture, cultivated land protection and agricultural cleaner production should be jointly promoted and popularized. Fourthly, strengthen technical cooperation. Joint research and development of agricultural technologies adapting to different climate change conditions should be implemented, and technologies, measures as well as experience of agriculture in response to climate change should be shared.

During the meeting, Yu held a bilateral talk with Mr. Senzeni Zokwana, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of the Republic of South Africa and made field visits to learn about production and operation of China-invested agricultural enterprises in South Africa.
