First Meeting of China-Sierra Leone Mixed Committee on Fisheries held in Freetown

On June 18, Vice Minister Yu Kangzheng and Emma Kowa, Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Sierra Leone, co-chaired the First Meeting of the China-Sierra Leone Mixed Committee on Fisheries in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone. Wu Peng, Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Zhang Xueqian, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone attended the meeting. On June 19, the Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio met with Yu at the State House and witnessed the signing of the Minutes of the First Meeting of China-Sierra Leone Mixed Committee on Fisheries. President Bio expressed his gratitude to China for its long-term support for Sierra Leone and spoke highly of fisheries cooperation between China and Sierra Leone. He hoped that the two sides will work together to further deepen China-Sierra Leone fishery cooperation in the future.


At the meeting, the two sides highly appreciated achievements made in the bilateral fishery cooperation and agreed that the signing of the memorandum of understanding on China-Serra Leone fishery cooperation and the meeting of the Sino-Sierra Leone Mixed Committee on Fisheries will play positive roles in further strengthening China-Serra Leone fishery cooperation for the new period. The two sides also negotiated and reached consensus on issues including: determining the access fishing scale of Chinese fishing vessels in a reasonable way, jointly combating illegal fishing activities, establishing fishing information exchange mechanisms, jointly creating a sound investment environment, strengthening the assessment of fishery resources of Sierra Leone, building port facilities and promoting the development of inland fishing and aquaculture in Sierra Leone.


On June 17, Yu held talks with heads of the Chinese pelagic fishing enterprises in Sierra Leone. He listened to the reports on the production and operation of the enterprises and put forward his suggestions and requirements to them on how to conduct regulated and orderly development of pelagic fishing.
