Vice Minister Qu Dongyu Attends WTO Symposium on Agriculture Policy Landscape

On June 14, Vice Minister Qu Dongyu attended the WTO Symposium on Agriculture Policy Trend in Geneva, Switzerland, and delivered a keynote speech entitled Chinese Practices for Promoting Agricultural Development Through Information and Communication Technology.


According to Qu, on the basis of inheriting Chinese agricultural civilization and persisting in reform and opening up, the Communist Party of China puts forward and implements new ideas of development, which promotes the realization of historic achievements and changes in the development of agriculture and rural areas, out of which forces driven by innovation such as information and communication technology play a significant role. In recent years, the Chinese government has utilized e-commerce as a breakthrough and pushed forward deep integration between modern information and communication technology such as mobile internet, big data as well as internet of things and agriculture, rural areas and rural residents. At the same time, China also improved policy system in an creative way, strengthened network infrastructure construction,gave full play to the main body role of market and delivered a good performance in pilot demonstration, training and guidance. As a result, informatization and intellectualization have become major supports for promoting agricultural transformation and upgrade and improving production mode as well as lifestyle in rural areas. Qu also highlighted that China was willing to take the express train of the internet and development of digital economy with the rest of the world while accelerating its digitalized, networked and intelligentized agriculture. Meanwhile, China stands ready to strengthen cooperation with international organizations such as WTO and national governments in order to help small agricultural households in developing countries enter into promising markets under the background of globalization and integrate into the global industrial chain and value chain in pursuit of jointly making new contributions to global development of agriculture and rural areas and promotion of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.


Before the symposium, Qu met with Mr. Alan Wolf, Deputy Director-General of WTO and they exchanged views on issues with common concern such as the development of e-commerce in Chinese rural areas and the trend of multi-lateral trade system.
