The 15th Meeting of China-Viet Nam Steering Committee on Beibu Gulf Fishery Cooperation was held in Da Nang, Viet Nam, from May 28 to 30, 2018.

The Meeting reviewed the implementation of China-Viet Nam Agreement on Fishery Cooperation in the Beibu Gulf (Agreement) for 2017-2018, and mapped out fishing operation scale, joint investigation on fishery resources, joint inspection on law enforcement in the common fishing zone in the Beibu Gulf for 2018-2019.

The two sides made positive comments on the bilateral fishery cooperation in 2017-2018. Both agreed that with joint efforts, China and Viet Nam enjoy sound fishery production, responsible fishery operation and achievement in fishery exchanges and cooperation in the Beibu Gulf. The two sides agreed on the respective scales for fishing access to waters in the Beibu Gulf for 2018-2019, no permits to be issued to those fishing vessels jointly confirmed by law enforcement agencies in 2017-2018 whose fishing operation violated provisions under the Agreement. The Vietnamese side will instruct local fishers to avoid fishing on the east zone (territorial sea of China) of the delimitation line during fishing moratorium.

Since the Agreement came into effect in 2004, China and Viet Nam have jointly conducted law enforcement and resource conservation activities in the Beibu Gulf, resulting in a halt or reverse on the decline of fishery resources in the Beibu Gulf. China and Viet Nam will jointly hold an event to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Agreement in 2019 and work out future cooperation mechanisms and areas upon the expiration of the Agreement.
