On May 24, the Signing Ceremony for WFP-China Development Projects was held in Beijing. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas of the People Republic of China and the World Food Program (WFP) officially launched the Hunan Xiangxi pilot project of preschool children’s nutrition improvement, and the Anhui Jinzhai poverty reduction project of kiwifruit value chain development. Vice Minister Qu Dongyu attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.

According to Vice Minister Qu, China is now at a crucial stage for comprehensively pushing forward the rural vitalization strategy and winning the tough battle against poverty. After 12 years, WFP restarted its development projects in China with a focus on deep-seated poverty-stricken areas, and targeted its assistance to the most needed population. The WFP has facilitated the efforts of the Chinese government in implementing the rural vitalization strategy and carrying out the poverty reduction mission, reflecting a good partnership between the two sides. The Chinese government will cooperate with the international community, including the WFP, and make unremitting efforts in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Delegates attending the signing ceremony also included representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Development and Cooperation Agency, the International Poverty Reduction Center in China, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development, the United Nations Center for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization and relevant departments of Anhui and Hunan province.
