Chief Economist Zhang Hecheng Attends 34th Session of FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific

On April 12 and 13, the Ministerial Meeting of the 34th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC) was convened in Nadi, Fiji. Participants held in-depth discussions on hotspot issues including the regional state of food and agriculture, Zero-Hunger initiative, agriculture and climate change, and food security in the Pacific Islands, and they also held consultations on the FAO’s work priorities in the Asia-Pacific region. A delegation headed by Mr. Zhang Hecheng, Chief Economist of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, attended the session.


During the session, Zhang stated China’s rural vitalization strategy and proposed the following suggestions on promoting agricultural development and food security in the Asia-Pacific region: firstly, increase agricultural inputs in pursuit of the priority on agriculture and rural development; secondly, adopt the philosophy of green development in pursuit of sustainable agriculture development; thirdly, accelerate rural vitalization in pursuit of integrated urban-rural development; fourthly, continue support to smallholder farmers in pursuit of inclusive development.


On the sidelines of the event, Zhang met and exchanged views with FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva and Fijian Minister for Agriculture Inia B. Seruiratu.
