Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen met with Mr. Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, in Beijing on 7 December 2017. They exchanged views on strengthening fisheries cooperation between China and the European Union (EU).

Vice Minister Yu noted that in recent years, China and the EU have developed sound fisheries cooperation with aquatic products taking up an important position in bilateral agricultural trade. The two sides have made positive progress in their fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing by establishing the EU-China Working Group on IUU matters, and have maintained frequent exchanges and supported each other in international fisheries governance, jointly contributing to sustainable fisheries development around the globe.

Vice Minister Yu stressed that China will pursue green development of fisheries that features healthy aquaculture, fishing at moderate sustainable level and resource conservation to foster a strong fisheries industry.

Given great potential and broad prospects for China-EU fisheries cooperation, Vice Minister Yu suggested that the two sides fully utilize platforms such as the Working Group to continue cooperation in fight against illegal fishing, promote good governance on international fisheries, enhance mutual trust and seek common development.

Mr. Vella fully agreed with Vice Minister Yu. He expressed that aquaculture will be strengthened in the EU to meet its market demand and reduce pressure on resources resulted from overfishing. The EU cherishes cooperation with China and is willing to enhance such cooperation and facilitate exchanges of experience with openness and sincerity.
