MOA, WFP open new chapter in cooperation

Minister Han Changfu met Mr. David Beasley, Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP), in Beijing on 20 November, 2017. The two sides exchanged views on further strengthening and broadening cooperation.


Minister Han spoken highly of WFP's outstanding achievements in eliminating global hunger and malnutrition and thanked the WFP for its contribution to agricultural development and poverty alleviation in poverty-stricken areas in China. As China's competent department for cooperation with the WFP, MOA will further cement partnership with the WFP, conduct innovative cooperation in poverty alleviation and reduction, South-South Cooperation and human resources development, and support in building WFP China Office into WFP’s Centre of Excellence which aims to disseminate China’s ideas, experience, practices and expertise in agricultural development and poverty alleviation to other developing countries.


David Beasley highly commended China's outstanding achievements in poverty reduction and agricultural development since the adoption of reform and opening-up policy, and thanked China for its great support to the WFP in reducing poverty and fighting hunger. The WFP attaches great importance to its cooperation with China, and stands ready to work with the MOA to expand cooperation in poverty reduction and alleviation, South-South Cooperation, knowledge sharing and human resources development.


At the end of the meeting, Vice Minister Qu Dongyu and WFP's Chief of Staff Rehan Asad signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the World Food Programme on the Junior Professional Officer Programme. Such cooperation is the first of its kind in the history of China-WFP cooperation, providing more opportunities for outstanding Chinese youth to participate in WFP work.
