The 2017 Symposium of Prevention and Control Strategies for Classical Swine Fever (CSF) was held in Beijing on 11-13 October 2017. Mr. Zhang Zhongqiu, State Chief Veterinary Officer and President of OIE Regional Commission for Asia, Far East and Oceania, and Mr. Vincent Martin, FAO Representative in China and DPR Korea, attended and addressed the symposium.

Mr. Zhang said that the National Classical Swine Fever Reference Laboratory under China Institute of Veterinary Drug Control was designated as OIE Reference Laboratory for Classical Swine Fever earlier this year, signifying OIE’s full recognition of China’s laboratory building and research capacity. China has achieved advanced world level in CSF prevention and control.

However, long-term efforts are still needed and as an OIE Reference Laboratory, the National Classical Swine Fever Reference Laboratory should play a greater role at national, regional and global levels. Mr. Zhang noted that in order to eradicate CSF, we should draw lessons from the past, integrate technological and management measures, promote the prevention andcontrol level and provide better technological support for government decision-making.

The symposium gathered a number of leading CSF experts and scholars both from China and abroad. They discussed the status quo, key technologies and strategies for the control and eradication of the plague, and exchanged the latest research developments.
