State Chief Veterinary Officer Zhang Zhongqiu chairs meeting of OIE Regional Commission for Asia, Far East and Oceania

The 85th General Session of the World Assembly of OIE Delegates opened in Paris on 21 May 2017. State Chief Veterinary Officer Zhang Zhongqiu headed the Chinese delegation to the conference and chaired the meeting of OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania on 22 May.

 

The Regional Commission meeting discussed the work scheme, institution building and a number of other major issues on the agenda. Dr. Zhang, also President of the Regional Commission, delivered the annual work report.

 

Under the leadership of Dr. Zhang since 2016, the Regional Commission has made great achievements in conducting OIE’s Sixth Strategic Plan (2016-2020) and the six Missions defined in OIE regional framework.

 

In his speech at the meeting, Dr. Hirofumi Kugita, OIE Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific, expressed his appreciation to China for its contribution to animal health developments in the region.

 

The meeting also held elections to fill vacancies in OIE Council and the Regional Commission upon nomination, deliberation and other required procedures. The meeting unanimously approved the following: Cambodian Representative to OIE was elected candidate of OIE Council member, Bhutanese and Japanese Representatives to OIE were elected Vice-Presidents of the Regional Commission, and Singaporean Representative to OIE was elected Secretary General of the Regional Commission.

 

The meeting also discussed the coordination of stance at the General Session, and reviewed the preparation work for the 30th Conference of the OIE Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania, among others.
