Mr. Bi Meijia, Member of the CPC Leading Group and Director General of the Department of Personnel and Labor of the MOA, visited the Ministry of Agriculture of Chile, held meetings with Minister Mr. Carlos Furche and Undersecretary Mr. Claudio Ternicier González respectively and exchanged views on strengthening China-Chile agricultural cooperation on 6 March 2017.  Mr. Bi and Minister Furche signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation of China-Chile Demonstration Farm 2017-2019. Chinese Ambassador to Chile Mr. Li Baorong and Commercial Counselor Mr. Liu Rutao attended the meetings.

Mr. Bi briefly reviewed agricultural cooperation between China and Chile and fully recognized achievements of bilateral cooperation in recent years. With strong complementarities and solid foundation, China–Chile agricultural cooperation has vast potential to be taped and a broad prospect to be opened up. He suggested that the two countries continue capitalizing on the role of the China-Chile Joint Committee on Agriculture, facilitate the establishment of the joint demonstration farm and accelerate exchanges in agricultural scientific research. He also noted that both sides should deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation in fisheries and promote connection and integration of agricultural sectors for win-win outcome.

The Chilean side agreed with Mr. Bi and expressed its willingness to enhance bilateral agricultural cooperation. Chile hoped that the two countries could begin constructing the China-Chile Demonstration Farm as soon as possible, promote exchanges in agricultural science and technology, and launch joint research in areas of integrated pest management, pesticides, animal genetic resources and biotechnology. Chile encourages Chinese fishery businesses to make investment in deep-water and wave-resistant cage culture and continue using Chilean port for replenishment and maintenance. Chile also welcomes Chinese businesses to Chilean agricultural trade fairs to boost bilateral trade.

During his stay, Mr. Bi also visited the Institute of Agricultural Research of Chile, the proposed base for the China-Chile Demonstration Farm and the cooperation project of Joyvio Group, a subsidiary of Legend Holdings, in Chile.
