Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen attends 84th General Session of OIE World Assembly

The 84th General Session of the World Assembly of the World Organization of Animal Health (OIE) Delegates opened in Paris, France on May 22, 2016.  Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen headed a Chinese delegation to the General Session and addressed the opening ceremony. 


Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen noted that the Chinese Government appreciates OIE's efforts in taking the improvement of global animal health as its significant mission and playing an important role in standard-setting in animal health to ensure the safety of world trade in animals and animal products. As a major country in animal farming and a major consumer in animal products, China has always highly valued animal diseases control and animal-origin food safety. China will actively fulfil its obligationsas an OIE member, and stands ready to continue improving the bilateral and multilateral cooperation mechanisms and regional and global animal health under the OIE framework.


The main agenda items of this year's General Session include the review of OIE annual work report, revision of relevant OIE animal health codes, deliberation on OIE 6th Strategic Plan and in-depth discussion on technical items such as the economics of animal health and antimicrobial resistance.


This year' Session has brought together over 900 representatives from 180 OIE Members and international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).  


Prior to the opening ceremony, Vice Minister Yu held a meeting with OIE Director General Dr Monique on further deepening China-OIE cooperation. Dr Monique Eloit spoke highly of China's participation in OIE work and China's role in OIE, expressing that China, taking the guiding role of a major country in animal farming and veterinary service, has contributed greatly to the improvement of regional and global animal health. Vice Minister Yu reconfirmed China’s willingness to jointly promote the global animal health with OIE. The two sides signed a cooperation agreement after the meeting.
