Chief Veterinary Officer Zhang Zhongqiu attends 83rd General Session of OIE World Assembly

The 83rd General Session of the World Assembly of the World Organization of Animal HealthOIEDelegates opened in Paris, France on May 24, 2015. State Chief Veterinary Officer Zhang Zhongqiu headed the Chinese delegation to the Session, and chaired the Asia-Pacific session as OIE Asia-Pacific President.


At the Asia-Pacific session Zhang Zhongqiu delivered a keynote report on transboundary animal diseases (TADs) control in the region. The participants discussed the five-year work plan of the region from 2016 to 2020, the performance assessment of veterinary authorities, and implementation of animal welfare strategy. Zhang pointed out that there is a large livestock population and diversified farming patterns in the Asia-Pacific region. We are faced with big challenges in animal disease prevention and control. All members should enhance collaboration, deal with animal disease outbreaks jointly, protect public health and safeguard human health.


At the 83rd General Session, participants will discuss OIE’s annual work report, revise the Terrestrial and Aquatic Animal Health Codes, and exchange views on global animal health developments and trends, and the 6th strategic plan. The 83rd General Session will also elect a new Director General, a new Council, and leaders of regional commissions as well. Totally more than 900 participants from OIE, WHO, FAO and other relevant organizations attended the General Session.
