After nine months of hard work, the eco-friendly land consolidation project located in Jinjing town, Changsha county, came to a close in August 2014.

Different from traditional land consolidation models that focus on expanding cultivated land, the project pays more attention to sustainable development. It’s the first innovative demonstration project in Central China’s Hunan province that combines land improvement and ecological conservation.

With an investment of 14.18 million yuan ($2.32 million), the project covers a construction area of 277.34 hectares to create high-efficiency and ecological farmlands that ensure stable and high agricultural yields despite drought or excessive rains.

Andy, a natural resource management expert from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, visited Jinjing town several times. He greatly appreciated the design of the ecological revetment in the project.

The ecological revetment is made up of bricks with holes in the middle, offering a lifeline for plants and animals such as eels, shrimp and frogs.

“It keeps the ecological balance to a great extent,” said Guan Xin, a professor from Hunan Agriculture University.

“Besides, the ecological purification system in the project can reduce ammonia, nitrogen and phosphorus as well as degrade pesticides in the farmlands,” he said.
