CAAS was established in 1957 and is affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Peoples Republic of China. It is mainly engaged in agricultural applied research, applied basic research and high- and new-technology research. CAAS plays an important role in solving the sci-tech issues with general, directional and critical importance in China’s agricultural and rural development as well as in training high-level agricultural research professionals and unfolding international exchange and cooperation in agricultural science and technology.

At present, CAAS has 39 research institutes in China, 1 graduate school and 1 press. 13 of the CAAS
s 39 research institutes, along with CAAS graduate school and the press, are located in Beijing. The remaining 26 research institutes are distributed across 16 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions throughout China.

Among the 39 institutes, 15 are engaged in crops research and the crop industry; 11 are engaged in animal husbandry research; 8 in economic and environmental resource research and 5 in agricultural engineering and high- and new-technology research.

CAAS is the consortium of many respectable and well-known agricultural scientists. Over 6000 technical professionals working in the academy including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor LI Jia-yang, the President of the CAAS, is also the Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) as well as a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
