Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS)
Established in 1954, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) was the former South China Special Forest Research Institute in Guangzhou, which relocated from Guangzhou to Danzhou, Hannan in 1958 and was elevated to South China Tropical Agricultural Research Institute in 1965. In 1994, CATAS was official approved by the relevant state authority to rename as the current one. During its development period of more than 50 years, CATAS has been given the great care by the older generation of revolutionists such as Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Ye Jianying, Dong Biwu, Wang Zhen, etc, as well as the new leaderships of Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, and etc.
Composed of four sub-institutes in Danzhou, Haikou, Zhanjiang and Sanya (under preparation) CATAS covers an area of 5,400 mu in Danzhou as its core part, 300 mu in Haikou, 2,500 mu in Zhanjiang, and 60,000 mu as the field experimental base. It is a national research academy which specializes in tropical agricultural research and enjoys wide reputation in the field of tropical agricultural science and research both at home and abroad.
CATAS now is made up of 10 research institutes and 4 agricultural institutions. In 2006, CATAS was successfully approved by the concerned department to establish a state key research center of tropical crop engineering. It owns 1 joint base of Hainan Province and MOA for the state key experiments and cultivations, 1 state breeding center, 7 ministry-level testing centers, 5 provincial-level key labs, and 4 provincial-level engineering research centers.
Boasting over 3,000 members of staff, of which, over 2,000 staff are scientific technicians, more than 400 senor researchers, 12 state-level and ministry-level experts with outstanding contributions, CATAS has initially formed a talent team which is highly efficient and reasonable in structure so as to realize tropical agricultural innovation, scientific management, and technological support and transmission. CATAS has also set up a post-doctoral research center.
CATAS carries out scientific research in the field of tropical agriculture and enjoys high reputation both at home and abroad. In the field of basic research on tropical plants, such as rubber and banana trees, etc. Some achievements are in a leading position worldwide. CATAS has made great breakthrough in the research on mechanism of tapping panel dryness symptom in hevea, laticifer differentiation in hevea, vegetative storage proteins in tropical trees, and banana ripening molecule mechanism and control,. In the field of research application, integrating the demand of tropical agriculture, CATAS researches and promotes a large variety of new breed and new technologies to provide concrete scientific supports for the rapid development of our national tropical agricultural economy.
Since 1978, CATAS has won over 700 scientific awards, among which 22 are national awards including national invention awards and national scientific progress awards, over 300 ministry-level and province-level awards including HLHL Prize, Chinese Shennong Award, etc. Besides, CATAS has applied 68 patents, drafted 22 standards and 118 industrial standards.
At present, standing at the outset of the new history, CATAS has set a strategic goal to build a world leading tropical agricultural scientific center. In pursuit of this goal, with the leadership of MOA and the Hainan Provincial Government, CATAS will carry forward and take an initiative in developing advantages to make contributions to the economic development of tropical region and write a new chapter in the history of CATAS
